Legacies

There are several ways of leaving a legacy to The Athene Trust.

A residual bequest
Leaving the residue or balance of your estate to The Athene Trust after all other bequests and fees have been paid. This is the most effective way of supporting The Athene Trust because the legacy is not affected directly by inflation - its value increases with the value of your estate.
A pecuniary bequest
Leaving a fixed sum to The Athene Trust. You can make this count even more by making it ‘inflation proof’. This guide gives a suggested wording for your solicitor to use.
A specific bequest
Leaving a specific sum such as land or valuables.

Making a will is a positive and life-affirming step that makes sure your wishes live on in the future. It guarantees that what you have worked for during your lifetime is passed on only to people or causes you believe in, otherwise its value may be reduced by the need to pay inheritance tax.

Suggested Wording for Your Will

This wording taken to your solicitor will help with drawing up your Will.

A residuary bequest

If you wish to leave The Athene Trust the residue of your estate (after any specific bequests have been made) or a proportion of that residue, this form of words can be used:

I give all (or a fractional share of) the residue of my estate to The Athene Trust Charity No.1056444 (hereinafter called 'the Charity') such sum to be applied for general charitable purposes and I direct that a receipt of the Finance Offer for the time being of the Charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors for the said gift.

A pecuniary bequest

I wish to leave The Athene Trust a fixed amount of money:

I give to The Athene Trust (Charity no. 1056444) (hereinafter called 'The Charity') the sum of £_____ to be applied for general charitable purposes and I direct that a receipt of the Finance Officer for the time being of the Charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge of my Executors for the said gift.

For an inflation-proof pecuniary bequest

If you wish to leave The Athene Trust a fixed amount of money that keeps its value:

I give to The Athene Trust (Charity No. 1056444), the sum of money produced by dividing the sum of £_____ by the index figure in the Index of Retail Prices ('the Index') for the month in which the Will is executed and (having made allowance for any re-basing of the Index which may have happened in the meantime) multiplying it by the index figure in the index for the month in which death occurs.

Updating your Will

If you have already made a Will you can still help The Athene Trust by amending your Will quite simply by using a Codicil (the wording may vary within the UK so please check with your solicitor).

I declare this to be a (first, second etc) Codicil to my Will, dated and made the _____ (date).

I give to The Athene Trust (Charity No. 1056444) the _____% residue of my estate/sum of pounds (£_____) to be applied for general charitable purposes and I direct that a receipt of the Finance Officer for the time being of the Charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors for the said gift. In all other respects I confirm my said Will (and Codicils).

You may wish to specify the use of your legacy.
